Prickly Octopus

The Prickly Octopus, also known as the Algae Octopus, is a remarkable cephalopod prized for its intelligence, curiosity, and extraordinary camouflage abilities. Capable of rapidly changing both colour and skin texture, it can blend seamlessly into its surroundings—making it one of the most fascinating species you can keep in a marine aquarium.
Native to the shallow sandy and rocky habitats of the Indo-Pacific, this species thrives in environments rich in hiding spaces and varied textures. Its distinctive “prickly” appearance only adds to its visual appeal, creating a constantly shifting and engaging display for the dedicated aquarist.
This is a smaller species, typically reaching a mantle length of around 5 cm and an arm span of up to 30 cm. A minimum aquarium size of 100L is recommended, with a secure, escape-aware setup (even though this species is generally less prone to escaping than some other octopuses). As a diurnal species, it is active during the day, offering more opportunities for observation and interaction compared to nocturnal counterparts.
The Prickly Octopus is a carnivore and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, crabs, and small fish. Its intelligence makes feeding time especially rewarding—interactive feeding methods that encourage natural hunting behaviour help keep it mentally stimulated and reduce stress.
While generally curious and engaging, it can display semi-aggressive tendencies, particularly in confined spaces or if threatened. Care should be taken when considering tank mates, and reef setups are not recommended, as it may prey on other inhabitants or disturb delicate invertebrates. If corals are included, they should be non-stinging and suited to lower light conditions, as octopuses prefer dimmer environments. Anemones are best avoided.
Water quality is critical—this species is sensitive to fluctuations and requires stable, well-maintained parameters. Regular monitoring and diligent care are essential for success.
One important consideration is lifespan: like many octopus species, the Prickly Octopus lives for approximately 12 months. However, this short lifespan is balanced by an incredibly rich and engaging experience.
For experienced aquarists ready to take on the challenge of cephalopod care, the Prickly Octopus offers an unmatched combination of intelligence, behaviour, and visual intrigue. It’s not just a pet—it’s an ever-changing, interactive marine experience.
