Feeding Your Corals
Corals obtain nutrition in different ways, which is why there isn't one coral food that's perfect for every reef.
Some corals readily capture larger food particles, while others feed on microscopic suspended foods or benefit from dissolved organic nutrition. The right feeding programme will therefore depend on the species you keep, the size of their feeding structures and the nutrient conditions within your aquarium.
Target Feeding or Broadcast Feeding?
Target feeding allows food to be delivered directly towards individual corals and is particularly useful for LPS corals and other active particulate feeders.
Broadcast feeding distributes fine food particles throughout the aquarium, making them available to SPS corals, soft corals, filter feeders and other reef inhabitants.
Many successful reef aquariums use a combination of both approaches.
Don't Overfeed
More food doesn't necessarily mean better coral growth.
Introduce new foods gradually, follow the manufacturer's recommendations and monitor nitrate and phosphate levels alongside coral appearance and feeding response.
The aim is to provide enough nutrition for your reef without unnecessarily increasing nutrients within the aquarium.
