Choosing the Right Sand for Your Reef Aquarium
The substrate you choose can have a big impact on both the appearance and character of your reef aquarium. Different grain sizes create very different results, so it's worth choosing a substrate that suits your livestock, water movement and the style of aquascape you want to create.
Fine Reef Sand
Fine sands create the bright, natural appearance associated with tropical reef environments and are particularly attractive around open rockwork.
Products such as CaribSea Oolite Sand provide a fine-grained substrate that can be ideal when creating a soft, natural-looking sand bed.
Medium Reef Sand
A slightly larger grain size can provide a good balance between appearance and practicality.
CaribSea Fiji Pink Reef Sand, for example, combines a natural reef appearance with a 0.5–1.5mm grain size, making it a versatile choice for many marine aquariums.
Coarse Coral Substrates
