The Blue Pelagic Porcupine Pufferfish, Diodon eydouxii, is one of the rarest and most captivating puffers available in the marine aquarium trade. With its stunning azure-blue body, delicate black speckling, bright white belly, and unmistakable “smiling” expression, this fish is a true showpiece for aquarists who appreciate the unusual.
Unlike most porcupine puffers that inhabit reefs and rocky seabeds, the Blue Pelagic Porcupine Puffer spends much of its life cruising the open ocean near the surface. This unique pelagic lifestyle gives the species its striking blue camouflage and more streamlined appearance. Rarely seen in captivity, these fish are considered a genuine “once in a blue moon” find.
Puffers are famous for their incredible personalities, and the Blue Pelagic Porcupine is no exception. Intelligent, interactive, and highly engaging, they quickly learn to recognise their keeper and will eagerly greet you at the glass when feeding time approaches. Their curious nature and expressive behaviour make them one of the most rewarding marine fish to own.
Growing to around 27cm, they remain smaller than many other porcupine puffers, though they still require a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration and plenty of swimming room. A minimum aquarium size of 500L is recommended, with secure rockwork, caves, and open swimming areas. While they are active swimmers, they prefer gentler, diffuse flow rather than powerful currents.
The Blue Pelagic Porcupine Pufferfish is best suited to fish-only systems, as they are not considered reef safe and may nip at invertebrates or smaller tank mates. In the wild, their diet consists largely of planktonic shrimp and larvae, making them somewhat different from other Diodon puffers. In aquariums they thrive on a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets. Foods with shells, such as mussels or cockles, are important to help naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth.
Like all porcupine puffers, they possess one of the ocean’s most fascinating defence mechanisms. When threatened, they can inflate their body with water to appear much larger while simultaneously erecting their spines to deter predators.
Hardy, intelligent, and incredibly rare, the Blue Pelagic Porcupine Pufferfish is a truly special species that brings personality, beauty, and uniqueness to any large marine aquarium. For collectors of rare marine life or anyone looking for a fish with genuine character, this remarkable puffer is unforgettable.
