The Red Podge Grouper, also known as the Freckleface Podge or Red Soapfish, is a striking and rarely available species prized for its deep red colouration, mottled dark brown patterning, and lighter-toned underside. Despite its small size, this fish is a classic ambush predator, often seen resting on the sand bed or tucked into rockwork, patiently waiting to swallow unsuspecting prey whole.
This species thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices to provide shelter. Naturally secretive, it will spend much of its time hiding until feeding time. Due to its low metabolism, feeding can be modest, though regular offerings of enriched meaty foods are essential. If reluctant to eat, live foods such as enriched brine shrimp or bloodworms can help stimulate a feeding response.
While generally peaceful toward similarly sized or larger tank mates, the Red Podge Grouper will prey on very small fish (such as gobies) and small to medium shrimp species. It is considered reef safe with corals but should not be kept with tiny crustaceans. Only one individual should be housed per aquarium, alongside larger, peaceful companions.
A minimum tank size of 300 Litres is recommended, with strong filtration required due to the significant waste these fish produce. As with other soapfish, this species has the ability to release a toxin called grammistin when highly stressed or upon death, which can appear as a frothy, soap-like substance. Although this is extremely rare in captivity, appropriate care and caution should always be taken.
A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as this species can be prone to jumping. With the right setup and care, the Red Podge Grouper makes a unique and fascinating addition to a marine aquarium.
