The Tricolour Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma cf. scopas), commonly known as the Koi Tang, is a rare and visually striking variation of the Scopas Tang, highly prized for its unique colouration reminiscent of ornamental koi carp. Its natural range spans the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Mascarene Islands eastward to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to Lord Howe and Rapa Islands, resulting in wide individual variation and making each fish truly one of a kind.
Adults display a vibrant blend of colours, with colours such as yellow transitioning to blues, whites and brown. These shades gradually deepen from head to tail, while fine, intricate light-blue markings overlay the body, adding texture and visual complexity. Juveniles are especially attractive, with proportionally larger dorsal and anal fins and a subtle purplish body that highlights their sailfin appearance. Unlike standard Scopas Tangs, the Tri Colour Tang’s mottled cream, orange, brown, and dark markings ensure no two individuals are alike.
Active and constantly on the move, the Koi Tang thrives in large, well-established aquariums that provide ample swimming room and plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. While generally reef-safe and compatible with many non-tang tank mates, it can be territorial toward other tangs, and is best kept as one of a small group of tangs in larger aquariums or the only tang in the aquarium to minimise aggression and stress. Its laterally compressed body, elongated dorsal and anal fins, and sharp caudal spine make it a visually engaging and dynamic centrepiece fish.
Diet is a critical factor in the health and colouration of Tricolour Sailfin Tangs. While they will consume meaty foods alongside other fish, they require a marine algae-rich diet to thrive. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or using a seaweed clip at least three times per week, supplemented with high-quality herbivore foods and occasional mysis or finely chopped meaty items. Proper nutrition strengthens the immune system, reduces aggression, and maintains vibrant colouration.
With adequate space, stable water conditions, and a nutritious diet, the Tricolour Sailfin Tang / Koi Tang is a hardy, long-lived, and captivating addition to any large saltwater aquarium, providing constant movement, visual interest, and a splash of truly unique colour.
